Inkaterra's Best Moments from 2014

It has been a year full of achievements and memorable experiences here at Inkaterra, and we  thought what better way to end the year than by sharing our favourite highlights with you.

This year Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel featured in the 2014 Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards, as well as  being nominated and shortlisted in two categories at the PURE Awards. We are extremely proud of these nominations, recognising the conservation work we carry out and unique experiences we create.

Inkaterra is proud to be celebrating  yet another year of successes in our commitment to conservation. The philosophy of Inkaterra is and always will be, to preserve Peru’s nature and cultures, sharing them with the world. We have been lucky enough in 2014 to spot some amazing wildlife in and around our properties, and we would like to share a few of our best sightings from 2014. Firstly our Head Explorer guide Braulio Puma was lucky enough to spot a wild Andean Bear climbing down the rocks near Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel.

We were also exceptionally lucky to spot some of Peru’s rarest birdlife: The beautiful and striking Quetzal with its golden-green wing and red belly wasn’t hard for the team to miss.

There was also a sighting of the Harpy Eagle, perched on a Ficus Insipida tree on the trails around Inkaterra Hacienda Concepción.  The Harpy Eagle is recognised as being endangered due to the deforestation of its natural habitat caused by illegal mining operations and local livestock farms, making this sighting extremely exciting.

EAGLE

One of our most recent sightings was of the Murciélago (White) Bat, during an excursion to Lake Sandoval. Here it is hanging peacefully under a Mauritia palm leaf.

BATExcitingly for Inkaterra and its guests, there have also been two sightings of rare wild cats. Firstly during a twilight river excursion an adult Jaguar was spotted lying in the palm leaves. After only a few minutes the Jaguar disappeared into the rainforest, but it is incredibly rare for these lucky travellers to have a small glimpse of such a magnificent creature. Guides at  Inkaterra Hacienda Urubamba also had sighting of an Andean Wild Cat.

The Andean Wild Cat is expertly camouflaged against the backdrop of the jungle.

These achievements and sightings highlight what a fantastic year it has been across all the Inkaterra properties. We are all very much looking forward to see what 2015 has in store for us.

Happy New Year everyone.
